Tree Removal in Wilson, NC

Wilson takes its trees seriously. The city has been a Tree City USA since 1977, and its historic neighborhoods are full of big shade trees. When one of them dies, splits, or ends up on the roof, here’s what to know before it comes down.

Trees in Wilson’s historic districts

Wilson has three local historic districts: Old Wilson, West Nash, and Broad-Kenan. Exterior changes there need approval from the Historic Preservation Commission, and the city’s design guidelines put major landscaping and changes to natural features such as trees under the Commission’s review.

The guidelines say mature trees should only come out for disease, storm damage, damage to a historic building, or utility line conflicts, and that a diseased or storm-damaged tree should be replaced with the same species. If your home is in one of these districts, check with the city’s historic preservation staff before a removal is scheduled.

Storm damage around Wilson

In August 2024, a tornado from Tropical Storm Debby tore through Wilson County, heavily damaging Springfield Middle School and bringing down trees and power lines. Storms like that are why dead limbs and leaning trees over the house are worth dealing with before the next one.

If a tree is tangled in a power line, stay back and call Wilson Energy. Line work is for trained utility crews only.

Getting rid of the debris

The city collects bagged leaves on yard-waste day and runs vacuum leaf collection from late October into early March. A removal leaves far more than a curbside pile, though, so ask your tree crew to include haul-away in the estimate.

Wilson tree questions

Do I need approval to remove a tree in a Wilson historic district?

Very possibly. Wilson’s design guidelines put changes to trees in the Old Wilson, West Nash, and Broad-Kenan districts under Historic Preservation Commission review. Check with the city before work starts.

A limb is on the line to my house. Who do I call?

Call Wilson Energy first and stay well away from the wire. Once the line is safe, a tree crew can handle the rest of the tree.
